Assalam Alaikum! Before I properly start the Blog, there are two things in my mind that I want to share with you.

  • The first thing is that I am not a perfect praying person myself. I have been trying for sometime to wake up early in the morning and pray Fajr prayer on time, and during that time, I have found some useful tips that have helped me to wake up and pray Fajr prayer on time and I want to share those tips with you as well so that they may help you too in praying Fajr on time.
  • And the second thing is that, you can’t pray Fajr on time unless you have strong conviction and intention before sleeping. You can only pray Fajr on time if you have Niyyat (intention) to wake up early. If you don’t have intention to pray Fajr in the morning before you go to sleep, then no matter how much you say in the day that you want to pray Fajr on time, you can’t really do it.
So, here are 5 tips that I have found useful in praying Fajr on time.

Tip # 1 is that you go to bed on time. It sounds trivial but it really is not. If the prayer time is 6:00 AM and you’re awake till 3 or 4 AM, forget that you’ll be able to wake up on time.

Often times, what happens is that we are either working late or busy gossiping or watching a movie… we get so indulged in those activities… we keep saying, okay I’m going to bed in just a few minutes… and we don’t realize until it gets really late.

So if you really want to wake up on time then go to bed at least 6 to 7 hours before the time of Fajr prayer.

Tip # 2 is that set your alarm and place it as far as possible from your bed. If you place it alongside your bed, it’ll ring, and you’ll shut it off in your sleep without even realizing.

This has happened to me a thousand times! So what has proved much effective for me is placing the alarm as far as possible from the bed, at a place where it’s still audible but far enough that I need to get out of the bed and walk a few steps to turn it off.

Also, an additional thing that I have done regarding that is to keep the alarm at a place which is near the place of Wudu (ablution).

Tip # 3 is to create such an environment around you before sleeping that when you wake up in the morning, it’s super easy for you to get out of bed and pray Fajr prayer. There are multiple things here. For example, if the weather is cold, make sure to keep your shoes and warm clothes near your bed before sleeping so that you wear them immediately after waking up and walking up to the place of Wudu gets easier.

Secondly, if possible, keep warm water available for Wudu. Thirdly, keep your prayer mat spread out on the floor before sleeping so that you don’t even have to make that effort. If you want to use the heater, keep the ligher near it so that you can also turn it on quickly. And if you need to take Ghusl (bath), then try to take it before sleeping.

Of course if taking Ghusl becomes compulsory for you during sleeping then we can’t do anything in that case you’ll have to take Ghusl in the morning. But otherwise, try to sleep as prepared as possible so that when you wake up, you just go there, do Wudu, pray Fajr and that’s it.

Tip # 4 is to set a tangible reward for yourself if you succeed in praying Fajr on time and likewise, set a penalty for yourself if you miss praying Fajr on time. This will be different for different people. But think about one thing in your entire day that you love to do and one thing that you don’t like to do at all, and associate it with Fajr.

This will motivate you the entire day that okay if I fail to pray Fajr on time, then I’ll have to do that particular task. An easy example of this is to set aside a certain amount of money that you’ll give in charity if you fail to pray Fajr on time. Similarly, if you find fasting difficult then you can also make this a penalty that okay if I don’t pray Fajr on time, I’ll fast that day. So this will highly motivate you that okay I HAVE to wake up and pray Fajr on time.

Tip # 5 is to record your progress of praying Fajr on time in an app or a calendar or whichever other way you like. For example I use an app called Habit Loop in which I simple put a check mark on the day when I am able to successfully pray Fajr on time or a cross mark on the day when I fail.

The benefit of logging your daily progress is that it helps you pinpoint when you are doing good and when you’re drifting away from your goal and need to improve. Furthermore, you can set personal goals, like okay I will pray Fajr prayer on time for 10 consecutive days so it will further motivate you to wake up early.

I hope these tips will help you in praying Fajr on time. Remember me in your prayers and I’ll remember you in mine… may Allah Almighty help us all in praying Fajr on time.
